Questions we get about deck & fence
How often should I stain my deck in the Lake Norman area?
In the Lake Norman climate, most decks need re-staining every 2-3 years. Decks with southern exposure or near the lake may need it every 18-24 months due to UV and moisture. We'll assess your deck's condition during regular visits and let you know when it's time.
Can a handyman replace deck boards, or do I need a contractor?
A handyman can replace individual deck boards, repair railings, and fix stairs without a general contractor license in North Carolina, as long as the total project stays under the $40,000 licensing threshold. Our crew handles deck board replacement regularly — it's one of our most common outdoor tasks.
How much does deck staining cost in Mooresville NC?
With a Lake Norman Handyman subscription, you pay for stain and supplies only — typically $150-$400 in materials for an average-size deck (200-400 sq ft). The labor is quoted at subscriber rates for full-deck jobs. Standalone deck staining in the Mooresville area typically runs $2-$5 per square foot fully installed.
Do you repair fence posts that are leaning?
Yes. We can reset leaning fence posts by re-anchoring with concrete, install post menders on broken posts, or replace posts entirely. Single post repairs typically fit within a subscription visit. Full fence section rebuilds are quoted separately.
What's the difference between deck sealer and deck stain?
Deck sealer is a clear protective coat that repels water but doesn't add color. Deck stain adds color and UV protection in addition to water resistance. In the Lake Norman climate, we generally recommend a semi-transparent stain — it gives both UV and moisture protection while letting the wood grain show. We'll recommend the right product for your deck's wood type and condition.
